Any time a person decides to get into shape, there are quite a few adjustments that need to be made. This is just as true when it comes to wanting a new website. Not only do you have to re-evaluate the content and make sure that it is up-to-date, but you also have to update photography and most likely will be updating the organization and structure of the site as well. We know it can be a little overwhelming to think about, but it is such a rewarding process!
When the YMCA of Central Virginia came to us and mentioned wanting a new site, we were thrilled. Having done their previous site a few years earlier, we were excited for the opportunity to update the site and give it a refreshed look to match their recent growth! This project presented us with two main challenges:
- The site would utilize an open-source platform called OpenY.
- This open-source platform was integrated into a complex Content Management System (CMS) called... ... ... ...DRUPAL
NO ONE likes to hear their overweight, and that's exactly how these challenges made us feel. We needed to remove the blockers keeping us from getting this site done, but we were ready to start the process. Just like any good health journey, there is a "right" way to do it, that will allow you to find success. We decided to take the proper steps to ensure we delivered a product that YMCA would be proud of. Keep reading to see our process for this beautiful website (and even some awesome before and after shots)!
Step 1: Build a Good Foundation
We like to consider the CMS of any site to be its foundation. While we are a Joomla Shop by trade (and absolutely LOVE IT!), we are not discriminatory to other CMS systems, including WordPress, Drupal and Squarespace.
While not having full experience in Drupal, we understood that resources in Lynchburg were slim and we wanted to be there for our client. We took it upon ourselves to learn Drupal and understand its full functionality and capabilities. By setting this foundation, we knew that we were close to beginning our journey!
Step 2: Establish a Plan
Just like any good health journey, a health and workout plan must be established before you begin. When it comes to websites, that plan should include an understanding of the platform you are using and a strong design layout.
For this website, we decided to go back to the drawing board and begin breaking down the YMCA — restructuring menu items, information on the home page and more! We wanted to be sure that this new site met the current needs of the people using it and those who may be joining in the near future.
